iRecorder Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the iRecorder and a DVR?
The iRecorder is a business system with a number of different applications, one of which is security, but is not designed as solely a security product. A DVR, on the other hand, is used only for security.
A DVR is used for situations where full-motion video is required and there is plenty of storage space for footage that is not searched very often.
An iRecorder records only single frames, where a snapshot is all that is required. iRecorder video data can be searched far more quickly and more intelligently.
Can my PC run the iRecorder?
The requirements of a PC to run the iRecorder are a 500MHz Pentium II running Windows 2000 or later, with at least 10GB of hard drive space.
A faster processor means searches complete faster, and more hard disk space allows for more images to be stored. The exact amount of disk space required is dependent on the frequency of image capture. A petrol station with 12 pumps that operates 24 hours per day can expect to store around 30 days' worth of images on a 10GB hard drive.
Do I need an Internet connection to use the iRecorder?
No. The iRecorder web browser interface can run on the same PC that hosts the iRecorder service. However, if you want to be able to check your image data from a different location or PC, an Internet connection will be required.
Do I need a Gnome to use the iRecorder?
No. The iRecorder can operate independently, using cameras connected directly to the PC where the iRecorder is running. However, the use of Gnome does provide two key benefits:
- Event data is provided from all of the devices compatible with Gnome;
- Images are retrieved from all of the cameras connected to Gnome, eliminating the need for a video capture card (see below).
What sort of cameras can I use with the iRecorder?
The iRecorder supports any camera capable of connecting to a PC. This includes all IP digital video cameras (progressive scan is recommended for the best results). The use of analogue cameras requires a Picolo video capture card installed in the PC.
